LET’S TALK – The workshop programme during YOUNG STAGE 2023
The mission and goal of YOUNG STAGE is, among other things, to impart knowledge to young artists, to show them different aspects of being an artist, to prepare them for the free market, to encourage them to think and to give them professional advice. In addition, many direct contacts with bookers, directors and other professionals of the scene shall be made at the festival itself, so that everyone will go home with a bunch full of new inputs, suggestions and contacts.
NEW: All workshops are open to performing arts professionals free of charge. What is discussed at the workshops does not only apply to actors in the circus scene. The topics are just as relevant for other branches of the performing arts such as dancers, musicians, actors etc.. Producers, directors and bookers are also welcome. Let’s talk!

Workshop “Had I known – Management for your Rockstar Career”
Workshop leader: Andréanne Quintal (Canada), Artist, Producer
In this workshop Andréanne will show concrete tools to turn artists into entrepreneurs. How do you sell yourself? How do you get re-engaged and why don’t you get re-engaged? How much is one worth? How do you achieve goals you never thought possible? Topics are addressed that help to become a master of the industry and to understand the reality of the market. Afterwards, workshop participants will be equipped with important tools to successfully master professional challenges.
Friday, 12 May 2023 14:00 – 15:30
Workshop “How and why to create something outstanding?
Workshop leader: Urs Jäckle, Artistic Director Krystallpalast Varieté Leipzig
In a sea of artists, you have to stand out. Only if you stand out from the crowd can you create your personal brand, make a living from it and get into festivals and production shows. But how do you create something new? What is your favourite approach and how can you put it into a marketable form? How have the circus legends of the past done it? Why do you choose a certain music and not another? How do you deal with feedback? At the end of the workshop you will leave with a set of concrete techniques and lots of inspiration. If you want to work professionally in any area of performance, you shouldn’t miss this rare opportunity for high-level creative exchange.
Saturday, 13 May 2023 11.30 – 13.00 h
“Changing perspectives. Q&A about Showproduction.”
Workshop leader: Nadja Hauser, Festival Director, Show Producer.
Is a project/show not art if it works commercially and attracts a large audience? What do you understand by the terms commerce and culture, or are the two terms opposites? Do producers basically want to exploit artists? Do you create your art only for yourselves or for an audience? Who is your audience anyway? What does it mean to create AND produce a show yourself? What do you have to consider?
Sometimes it’s good to change perspectives to fully understand a business or a whole industry. This workshop is about highlighting the most important aspects of show production and looking at things from a different perspective for once. It is about risks, the meaning of sponsoring and fundraising, the relevance of communication and storytelling and much more.

YOUNG STAGE PROFESSIONAL SESSION
It is very important to us to promote networking in the national and international circus and show scene, to facilitate new contacts and to draw attention to important topics.
The Professional Session will be hosted by Urs Jäckle, Artistic Director Krystallpalast Varieté Leipzig.
Topics:
“Spot to Africa – the forgotten continent in circus”.
Talk with Sosina Wogayehu from Ethiopia.
Sosina Wogayehu was born and raised in Addis Ababa. After an international career, she returned to Ethiopia to set up a circus programme in Addis Ababa. She wanted to build on Ethiopia’s circus traditions and share them with the world. She also wanted to use circus as a tool for empowerment, to engage young people, support their academic development and offer them a pathway out of poverty. Her dream now is to create a permanent facility that offers young people in Ethiopia a way out of unemployment, a place they can call home: the Circus Center, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
“SPEAK OUT – Together for a safer Circus”.
The workshop of the FEDEC – European Federation of Professional Circus Schools
SPEAK OUT aims at preventing all kinds of discrimination and gender-based violence in the circus and street arts sector, by supporting its core organisations (schools, festivals, companies…). The objective is to foster physically, psychologically and emotionally safe educational and work spaces. SPEAK OUT will raise awareness among circus stakeholders about abusive conducts, and will collect, develop and disseminate tools & resources to help the sector evolve in a sustainable and structural way, towards more equity and integrity.
After the Professional Session there will be coffee and cake for all. 😉
